LAPUJOLE is resistant to Common Bean Virus(BCMV) and Anthracnose.

The aim was to transfer the gene for resistance to anthracnose to the original Tarbes bean's line without losing its recognized culinary qualities.

The first cross was made by Mr. Jacques HALLARD. The torch was then taken by Mr Chérif ASSAAD (Delta International Ltd). Seven years of research and breeding plus two years of field testing were required to introduce the new variety to the market. This variety combines the qualities of Tarbes bean and resistance to Anthracnose disease.

This work was funded by the Association of Tarbes beans in France.

Legends of disease resistances

The BCMV or (Bean Commone Mosaic Virus) is a virus that only attacks the bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). This virus is transmitted by several species of aphids but especially green pea aphid Acurtosiphon pisum. Other aphids Myzus persicae and Aphis fabae, very abundant on Bean can also transmit the virus but are less effective. This virus can be transmitted also by the seed in a very high proportion, up to 83%, while the usual rates are about 5 to 20% no more.
This is anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. It is a temperate disease or rainy tropical mountain. This fungus is primarily spread by rain, but can be transmitted by heavily contaminated seeds.
