Historical

A tomato improvement program of the ROSSOL varietal type resulted in the creation of two new fixed varieties, ROMITEL and RODELLA, co-obtained by I.S.R.A./I.N.R.A. They were developed from complex crossbreeding, artificial infection sorting for disease resistance and selection for agronomic traits carried out in Senegal over several years. These two varieties have, compared to ROSSOL, a more reduced vegetative development, larger and more fleshy fruits. They also have ROSSOL resistances (Fusarium, Verticillium and Meloidogyne sp°, resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. Lycopersici pathotype 2 and to Stemphylium. These resistances are not currently combined in any fixed variety, with a determined habit, the two varieties presented are of particular interest for regions where these fungi and nematodes are a limiting factor in tomato cultivation.
